| Circuit Corner 11 | September 5, 2009 |
| I posted a new Circuit Corner, featuring a warning sign for CNC machines that I drew up. I just set up a woodshop, so I will probably be adding a new section for woodworking projects soon. And I have a few circuits on the books to do for Circuit Corner 12. Hopefully I'll get the chance to write it soon. | |
| New test equipment. | June 22, 2009 |
|
Things have been progressing well here. I finished another bit of test equipment, my Power Box, which is a hybrid variable AC/DC supply for testing power supplies.
I'm also part of the way through building a solid-state load bank. Yes, that's also for testing power supplies. I am, in fact, designing power supplies recently. And in other news, I did my first aluminum melt recently. It didn't work very well, but it was inspiring enough that I'm going to build a proper blast furnace and try again.
| Light bulbs, Power Supplies, and Stuff | March 28, 2009 |
|
It's been a busy couple of weeks. I've spent a good portion of it upgrading my electronics lab, and the rest doing a few projects.
The first of those projects is my new Old-World Light Bulb Load, which I have posted on Instructables. It's meant to be used for testing power supplies, either as a ballast resistor, or a load resistor. The second of those is a little power supply. Specifically, a switch-mode supply, based on a flyback topology, which provides two 12V outputs and a 5V output, which all float relative to each other, from 120VAC. The prototype is now fully functional, and it really deserves its own page, which I may post shortly. It seems that my plan to build a RepRap will be delayed for a while, but it's still on the table eventually.
| Coming along, but not quite | March 10, 2009 |
|
My new software is starting to look like a blog platform now, but it still has a ways to go. With any luck, I'll have that ready to go soon.
JTex 2 is progressing nicely, and I'll probably post a demo version soon. I'm actually debating releasing the whole project under the GPL when it matures a bit. Still undecided on the matter, but it doesn't use any proprietary libraries, so at least it's a possibility this time around. Oh, and I may be starting to build a RepRap soon!
| Update | February 4, 2009 |
|
It has been a very long time since my last update, and my posting frequency has been terrible. This will now be changing. My server is back to a reasonable speed, and I have more project time these days. Since my last posting, I moved, bought a house, got married, built a new computer. With any luck, I will be able to post a little bit about some of that. I have been working on a new content management system, which among other things, will allow comments and OpenID authentication, but it is not yet ready to be deployed. Also, I have been tinkering on a new project: JTex 2. This is a modern take on my old procedural texturing system, and while it is not yet ready to be used, I am working on it frequently.
| A long time coming. | December 5, 2007 |
| My webserver's connection is currently very slow. I'm looking at fixing this as soon as I possibly can, but until then, updates have been sporadic. To fill the void, today I created an Instructables account. So, here's some new content: The Desk Squid | |
| New Circuit Corners | February 6, 2006 |
| Two new articles, Circuit Corner 7 and 8, have been written and added. Check them out! | |
| Oops. Spoke too soon. | October 12, 2005 |
| No sooner were things looking up here, I have to leave again. Suffice it to say simply that I'm looking for work, and have total flexibility in where. If anyone has any offers, drop me a line. | |
| As Time Passes | September 17, 2005 |
| This is just a quick update to say no, I am not dead. In fact, life is decent right now. I have started working on a couple new electronics projects, and a couple new software projects. I am now doing contract work of various sorts. More to come. | |
| Retro Classic Gaming | July 22, 2005 |
| I decided to upload a game that I have been working on. While technically a prototype of a general-purpose game engine that I have been writing, it is very playable. Check out Bugout on the side panel to try it out! And in other news, Posemaker, a program that I wrote to edit Biovision BVH files, is also now available. | |
| Back in the loop... | May 9, 2005 |
|
I have, once again, returned to Moncton. Life here is okay. I am in the process of finding work, so I may not be posting all that much, but when I do find a job, I should have a workshop again pretty quickly. With any luck, projects will start showing up on my page in the not too distant future.
In the meantime, I am slowly converting old content to the new CMS. The "About Me" page was just rebuilt from scratch, and all the obsolete information updated. I have a bunch of software projects that I will be releasing here relatively soon as well. Until then.
| Small update | December 18, 2004 |
|
Work on C4 continues, as I add more content using it. It's still not quite up to the point where it can replace the old CMS entirely, but it is getting close.
The fifth issue of Circuit Corner is up! Go check it out. Again, I update Circuit Corner with all the most useful tidbits from my electronics designs, so you may easily find something useful there. I'm almost through collecting my notes for issue six now too.
| New CMS | October 17, 2004 |
|
Yesterday, I finished the page rendering section of my new Content Management System. My new series of articles, "Circuit Corner", are now using this system. They also use my new-style web layout. I will likely be slowly converting my page to this format, but it will take some time.
Oh, and the electronics geeks among you, have a look through the articles. With any luck, I will update Circuit Corner whenever I have an interesting circuit available.
| Software! | August 28, 2004 |
|
A new (to you) program is now to be had on my webpage: XMOD2! This is a player for Protracker (and similar) module music files. And it supports cool effects like reverberation (listen to your favorite mods in a huge auditorium). It's available for Linux and Windows. Give it a try!
Lots of new things on the OS front. Cy/VOS kernel 3 is moving fast. A screenshot is on the project page. The new kernel is internally multithreaded, and uses no busywaits. This makes it suitable for use as a realtime operating system. Finally, check out the rendering on the jTex page.
| New software | July 18, 2004 |
|
Recently, I've been playing around with making a Python module to do procedural texturing. It's turned out pretty well, and some early results of this work can now be seen on the page labelled "Procedural Textures". It's still a work in progress at the moment.
Cy/VOS is working out quite nicely. It's now in V0.6.2, and hopefully I'll get a new snapshot of some sort up soonish. I've also recently been thinking over the possibility of releasing the source to my in-house MP3 streaming jukebox software. The main reason that I haven't done so is that it requires a lot of really obscure dependancies to function. It's really unpleasant to set up. Other than that, it's very powerful. Until next time.
| Cy/VOS Update | May 1, 2004 |
| Another update to Cy/VOS! Defining words, conditionals, and loops! This makes V0.2.0 complete! Grab a copy today. | |
| Operating System Goodness! | April 29, 2004 |
|
Major changes in Cy/VOS! Now more than just a simple demo, Cy/VOS implements a partially-functional FORTH interpreter. While defining words are currently not supported, the framework is in place, and just requires a couple more words (like CREATE) to function, so a new version is probably coming fast!
I've been working on a new content management system for this page, which is both the reason updates have been so slow recently, and hope that updates will come quicker in the future. When the new CMS is running, I'm planning to set up a section on printed circuit board tutorials. I've recently perfected the technique for myself, and it's working well. More on this later.
| Settling In | March 23, 2004 |
|
I'm finally getting settled in my new place now, and I'm loving it.
First, the person I'm dating is as geeky as I am, so we have a LOT of new projects coming. That, and I finally feel happy now, but if you wanted to hear angst you'd be at livejournal instead of here. We are building a GPS-based NTP appliance, so I will soon have a strata 1 NTP server here. It looks like this will require a custom PCB, so I might finally get around to putting up a PCB tutorial soon. I am in the process of writing an MP3 streaming jukebox as a backend for icecast. It works well, but is a little rough around the edges and has a HUGE list of dependancies. I might release it anyway (perhaps as an ebuild), but it'll be a while. I'm also looking at building a little MP3 component audio appliance out of an old laptop motherboard and some miscellaneous junk. More on that as it develops. NBASE is maturing quite nicely, and a new release is imminent. The API has changed rather noticably in places though, unfortunately. Fortunately, it looks like most of these changes are essentially final. My operating system, Cy/VOS, is about to be updated soon with the results of some recent coding sessions. I have most of a FORTH interpreter, which I plan to glue onto the boot kernel. This will give me a self-booting FORTH kernel, which is the bare minimum amount required to call it a full OS. When I add a few utilities for managing this webpage a little easier from here, then I will probably paste full sources for the FORTH kernel itself, since, unlike the boot kernel, it is decent code. I'm considering posting a little bit of code I wrote as a frontend for the xosd library. It reads from a fifo, and an auxiliary program to write to the fifo makes it into a very useful notification daemon. It was a quick and dirty hack but it works quite well. Oh, and the Write Me button now works again. I just realized that it's been broken ever since my move. If you didn't get any replies from me, feel free to try again. Enjoy!
| Moving Woes | February 25, 2004 |
|
I haven't posted in a while, and I realize this, but I have a good excuse!
Well, I just up and moved suddenly! A lot of things have changed, and when I get a chance to write up about some of them, I'll be able to post them. I'm no longer employed, and a bit burned out. Time to take a break and mend my body and mind. I'm happily living with someone I care for dearly in a big city, with plenty of opportunity ahead of me. This part is good. The bad is that I now, again, no longer have a workshop. However, all is not lost, and I fully expect to be doing interesting things in the place I'm in now. I'll make sure to write up some articles about my hacking. This page is now being hosted on aurora, which is now a gentoo-based webserver. Yes, I had to leave my beloved aurora behind, colocated with family. At least it's not alone in a closet. Europa, my newish laptop, is now filling the role of my primary machine, and I may have a new LAN server here sometime soon as well. More good news! I now have the time to build a proper content-management system for these pages, so they should start to improve in the near future. I also have the time to work on NBASE/Unity, and much work is already in progress in that department. Things are looking up for me!
| Thwarted again. | January 16, 2004 |
|
It seems that google got wise to our little trick... And the
Litigious Bastards are getting away with
it. Come on, we can't let a bunch of
Litigious Bastards
push us around like this! Add the link to your webpage, and hopefully we will
see some results. A search for "litigious bastards sco" returns their page, so
hopefully we will get "Litigious Bastards"
itself.
Anyway, now that I'm almost recovered from my little ordeal, things are just slipping into the same old boring routine. Work, rest, sleep, work, rest, sleep. I get a little bit of coding done on the weekends, so NBASE is actually progressing rather well (Elaan Technologies, go get NBASE and send me some bug reports!). I should actually have a new snapshot ready in a couple weeks.
| Litigious Bastards!. | January 12, 2004 |
| If you've been following the recent news on SCO, you may have heard of the new campaign to associate SCO with Litigious Bastards in Google. I think it is a wonderful idea. Quick, everyone post a link just like this one --> Litigious Bastards on their webpage somewhere! | |
| Back amongst the living. | January 7, 2004 |
|
I have returned to Moncton now, after an extended absense for medical reasons.
I am recovering well, and looking forward to things getting back to normal.
The good news is that I'm recovering physically. The bad news is that I'm in bad financial shape. Oh well, it happens. Things will get better. I have started doing a little tinkering with NBASE again, there are some good things coming. Stay tuned.
| Of life, the universe, and everything. | November 11, 2003 |
|
I added the most recent update to my PIC page, and I added a photo gallery
with pictures of my recent trip to Fredericton (purely architectural pictures,
I might add).
This is probably going to be my last update for a very long time. I am going in for major medical treatment in early December, and I will spend quite some time hospitalized. The good news is that it seems that I will live. A heartfelt thanks goes out to all that have helped me in these difficult times. You have my deepest gratitude.
| Bookbinding, yay! | October 18, 2003 |
| After working with a lot of different IC's, and having to keep printing and reprinting datasheets as I continuously lose them, I have decided to take up the fine art of bookbinding. Click on the 'Bookbinding' link to be taken there! | |
| More PIC goodness! | October 13, 2003 |
|
Maxim/Dallas' samples arrived, and having serial-line interfacing devices
prompted me to update my PIC section with a new RS232C client that does
LCD interfacing. As usual, if you want the code, feel free to write (I
have yet to have time to redesign my page, so I haven't actually posted
it).
Alas, life is being really rough with me lately. Hopefully things will improve before too long though.
| Another update | October 5, 2003 |
|
I added more pictures of my robot as it slowly gets built. Still waiting
on my circuit order though, which has all the power transistors I need for
my controller board.
I also updated the PIC16F84 section with pictures of my LCD attached. There is even a picture of it displaying a message! Feel free to write if you want the C code for it. I am planning to drastically reorganize my site lately, since some pages (especially the PIC page) are growing beyond all sanity. When that happens, I will probably add a little more detail to some of the subsections (like the code for my PIC stuff). Oh, and Microchip sent me a bunch of samples of different types of PIC micros, so before too long I will have information on other chips up here. Maxim/Dallas did the same, so I should even be adding stuff about more serial interfacing and using iButtons. (yay for free samples)
| Robot Madness! | September 13, 2003 |
|
I've just added a new section on the robot testbed I'm building.
There is plenty more good stuff coming soon!
I should have some more information about my new PIC setup soon, since I am in the process of adding an LCD display. I have a new circuit order coming soon as well, which includes 2 new types of PIC microcontroller, as well as some other good stuff. Stay tuned!
| The Rumours of My Death are Greatly Exaggerated | August 30, 2003 |
|
Ive just finished the most massive update to this page in the
entire history of it. Better yet, it looks like Ive done virtually
nothing!
The entire page has now been redone in PHP, making it a lot easier to maintain. So updates should be coming a lot quicker now. Im now mostly moved into my new place, and have started building nifty things once more. I managed to finagle a digital camera now, so I can even take pictures with ease! Which is good, since I have a *LOT* to add to this page. A new section has been added on a power supply I built over the past few weeks. I even had to learn a couple new skills for it! Hopefully I'll manage a visual redesign before too long as well.
| The Mysterious Vanishing Jen (part 2) | May 15, 2003 |
|
Life is so hectic. Working for a startup can be very draining, and now I'm
moving again very soon. I just paid a deposit on a new apartment, so hopefully
my workshop should be back up to its former glory before too long.
I've decided to try my hand at the ever-so-popular format of open letters. So in my open letters section, you will now find an open letter to Hilary Rosen, RIAA et al. It's a little scathing, so take your asbestos undies with you if you choose to read it.
| The Mysterious Vanishing Jen. | April 25, 2003 |
|
If I seem to have been gone for a long time, I have. I landed a programming
job with a local startup, and I've been busy, busy, busy! Despite a current
shortage of free time while we near our release date, I have managed to do
a few neat things with NBASE, and there should be another snapshot out
sooner or later.
Oh, and I'm DEFINATELY going to have to update my hardware page. I finally replaced the dead ZIP-CD... with a DVD+RW! Neat drive, this one! Anyway, until next time.
| Business Updates. | March 16, 2003 |
|
I recently launched Elaan Technologies, my
new business, distributing NBASE (under GPL! Go get it!). There has been a
new release now, and an announcement on freshmeat gave me a couple hundred
hits. I guess, if you build it, they really will come.
On the flip side, I have some explaining to do. The build system downloadable from here (quickmake) is version 3.2.0, while the version with NBASE is 4.0.0. Why did I neglect to release it? Honestly, I just don't have time to document a makefile system that will soon be obsolete. Unimake 5.0.0, the sucessor to quickmake, is undergoing heavy development and some testing, and will be released as soon as it is stable enough to deploy in NBASE. Unimake also removes the requirement for a mkhead program, using standard GNU m4 instead. In the meantime, feel free to pinch quickmakefile 4.0.0 from NBASE. While NBASE itself is GPL, quickmakefile is still released under the unrestrictive licence that it always has been.
| Business Launch. | March 6, 2003 |
| I just launched Elaan Technologies, my new business. Currently there is a snapshot of NBASE available for downloading there, so go get it! | |
| Darkness falls. | January 31, 2003 |
|
Life in rural Canada can be nice in some ways. Unfortunately, jobs are scarce,
especially jobs in technical fields. It appears that I am going to be caught
in this crunch.
I will try to keep this page live as long as I can afford, but without a job, this page may go dark. As if anyone ever actually reads it anyway. If anybody happens to need someone with a solid base in technical areas, I am available immediately and can relocate or telecommute. I may post my resume sooner or later, just in case.
| Happy new year, and stuff. | January 1, 2003 |
|
Just wishing everyone a happy new year, may your holidays be better than mine.
I should get a chance soon to get my new business webpage up, so maybe I will actually start releasing some real code. I am almost ready for a new snapshot of some Unity system sources, and I have to update the section on my build system. In fact, a replacement system, Unimake, will be replacing it soon, when I get a few bugs ironed out.
| Madness, I tell you! | December 8, 2002 |
| I just added ANOTHER new section. A few days ago I decided I wanted to start playing with popsicle sticks, and so now I have a section of the zany things I build with them. My first project is even there! | |
| Oh, the humanity! | December 6, 2002 |
|
Well, I've done it now. I've started writing an operating system! If
you find this the slightest bit interesting, try the link on the side to
Cy/VOS, and enjoy the madness! Whee!
Oh, and for a second update in one post, I started working on those tutorials I've been wanting to add. So now you can look through the first tutorial in the series, "Thinking About Electricity", which should help you wrap your head around electricity.
| Welcome Back Me! | December 5, 2002 |
|
Well, I'm back, now that school is no longer quite so demanding. I finally
updated my comics page to reflect the comics I actually read. I could also
mention that I am starting a web-comic of my own, and the first strip is
sketched (but not yet inked), but I think that announcement will have to
wait until after I get a scanner.
I hopefully will get a chance to put up a new feature or two, since I really have been working myself silly and have quite a few things ready. I hope I have more time to update in the coming weeks.
| So Very Tired | November 11, 2002 |
|
Thanks mainly to a terribly hectic life, I haven't been able to update my
page in a very long time. I've thought a little about the electronics
tutorials, and I suspect that I may do something like that eventually, once
my school work is no longer eating my soul.
Anyhow, in true random tradition, a new comic has been added to my comics page.
| Wax Lyrical | October 26, 2002 |
|
I decided today would be a good day to upload some more poems...
'Silver Rain' does stand alone, if it has to, but it makes a lot more
sense with 'Waterfall' first. I also wrote 'Dawn' yesterday, a sequel to
the two of them (it's also a sequel to another poem, but I'm not quite sure
how I'd explain that one).
Anyway, I hope you enjoy them. I'm starting to consider putting up a section of electronics tutorials, but I'm not sure if that would be redundant or not. Oh well, I'll decide by next time. My life is SOOO busy though.
| Computer appreciation day | October 4, 2002 |
|
Because, if it we don't show our computers how much we appreciate them, then
we lose a harddrive and a CD burner at once, and then have to listen to
some fan or other rattling away when it was quiet...
Ok, that was obviously bitter, and yes, I really DID lose my harddrive and my burner. Luckily, my harddrive was still slightly functional, so I managed to get all my data off of it without a single byte out of place *WHEW*. Anyhow... I now live in university residence, and my life is starting to get very strange... lol. I have had to update both the 'My Computer' page, as much of the hardware has just had a sudden upheival, and the 'My Comics' page, as Exploitation Now decided to exploit us, now. I have many many neat new electronics designs, I'm getting an intuitive understanding for analog circuits and the problems likely to be faced in their design... As such, I've developed some interesting, novel circuits, and I now have a lot of neat new ideas. The hardened control bus I was working on (multidrop, power-on-the-wires), primarily for home and light industrial automation, is now at least partially designed. I just wish I could build it, but then, I can always simulate and then get a prototype board made. Well, hopefully I can start updating my webpage a little more often now. Until next time.
| Birthday, whee! | September 1, 2002 |
|
Well, I'm now officially 21. It wasn't as bad as I had thought, at least I
wasn't alone. But this really isn't a place for me to rant about my personal
life, so I won't.
I really do miss my workshop. I have a few dozen ideas of things I want to build, and I can't. Oh well, I'll have a workshop again, just have to finish university.
| So very tired. | August 31, 2002 |
|
Well, I turn 21 tomorrow, and here I sit. All alone, in a strange town,
where i hardly know anybody. I'll be lucky if I see one person at all
on my birthday. Isn't life grand?
Oh well, other than feeling sorry for myself, life has been very hectic. I'm working on a zillion projects all at once, I have some really fun things in the cooker. Especially since nTec is now basically defunked, I have a big mess of code that I can suddenly start cleaning up for release. So there should be a new version of the build system upcoming. As well as the UNITY project, but I'll leave that one for wild speculation.
| Wow, where am I? | July 21, 2002 |
|
Wow, the last couple weeks have been rough. I just moved, suddenly.
My workshop and PC-board lab have been dismantled and are sitting in packing
crates. I have essentially no way of continuing my hardware persuits for
a while now.
My website went down as my webserver machine was actually physially transported, and it stayed down while I got PPPoE running for my new DSL connection. Even then, there is still some tuning left to do in order to keep this webpage up. Now, since I'm not about to abandon geekdom just because I had to move, I think I might be putting some software up here. I have some stuff that is almost ready for alpha-testing.
| Yay for me! | June 28, 2002 |
|
Well, I finally made the plunge and installed 3D drivers for my TNT2 Ultra.
They even allow me to continue using my second monitor! This is very neat.
I even dug out an old 3D engine I was working on a while back, which now works
beautifully. This is good news.
This should also ensure that I can actually play some games. I am quite anxious to try. Maybe I should try WineX or somesuch.
| Creativity | June 20, 2002 |
| I decided that I would add a new section. You see, I occassionally do some creative writing, so I'm adding a new section for it. Right now there is a poem I wrote a few years ago up there now. | |
| Small update | June 18, 2002 |
| Anyway, back again to report that I've updated the "About Me" page to be a little less braggy and a little more informative. | |
| Totally New Website! | June 9, 2002 |
| Welcome to my completely new and improved website! It might not look much different, but it took ALL NIGHT. I actually put a backend preprocessor in place, and re-did every last page on the site. Please report broken links to me. | |
| New pictures. | May 31, 2002 |
|
I just finished building my 555 clock oscillator, so I took a bunch of
pictures. You can find them in the "D.I.Y." section. So I have verified
that the device does, in fact, work.
Now I need to figure out how to make the pictures autorearrange when I have galleries like that. And I should dig out my old thumbnailing scripts and put them to work here too. Actually, this page should have a few more scripts, although I'm not sure if they should be front or back-end.
| Ad infinitum. | May 30, 2002 |
|
For some reason unbeknownst to me, I've been putting in an update every
day. If you wish to gripe at me about this, go ahead, I love hearing from
people ;)
Anyway, remember when I was griping about my QuickCam Pro 3000 being a Win-Cam? Well, it appears that this is no longer the case. The camera is now one of the best-supported cameras in Linux, with drivers included in the mainstream kernels (well, the LATEST mainstream kernel, anyway). You just set it up as a Philips camera, and you're set. I guess even though Logitech dropped the ball, Philips picked it up and ran with it (the driver is SLIGHTLY supported by Philips, if nothing else they released a LOT of specs for it, and donated a cam or two). So now there's a new picture of Aurora's case on her page. The Linux drivers seem to have MUCH better control of exposures, allowing me to take some pictures in almost total darkness (which is really cool). Anyway, having a cam that I can just plug into Aurora should help a bit with picture updates (although I've still got to figure out how to take pictures in my workshop). Anyway, till next time (tomorrow?).
| Another update. | May 29, 2002 |
|
Well, I've done quite my share of updates recently. I just added a new
section "CAD Software" that includes a description of how I do my design
work. I've also updated the description of the 555 circuit in the
"D.I.Y. Equipment" to be a bit clearer.
Oh, and I realize how big my main page was getting, so I moved all my entries from 2001 into a seperate page. This should make it much less unweildy to view.
| Alas, poor Ix! | May 28, 2002 |
|
Last night, one of my computers died. Ix was what I was using as a print
server and to control my X10 CM11A. It died sometime between me unplugging
the printer last week and plugging it in this week. Maybe I zapped the
machine or something doing either of those two operations, I know I'm not
really as careful as I should be.
Oh well, in the mean time, my web-server is now handling the printer, but I'm going to need to replace ix for the X10. Luckily it's a pretty much standard Compaq DeskPro (486DX2-50), so I'll just swap the peripherals into another one (I've got a big stack of these things and only use one or two). The harddrive seems to init, so I suspect I won't even have to reinstall. Oh, and I added a new section, the "D.I.Y. Equipment", which has a bunch of my designs for homemade test equipment. Currently, it just has an enhanced 555 circuit, but check it out, it's completely variable duty cycle.
| A real update! At last! | May 27, 2002 |
| Well, now, it HAS been a long time since I put up new pictures. I've got up a new picture of my oscilloscope with a square-wave attached (in the "Test Equipment" section). I also FINALLY added pictures to the "My Computer" page, so for any who want to see what Aurora looks like, you finally can. | |
| My life in a centrifuge... | May 17, 2002 |
|
Well, everything SEEMS to be spinning. I've been working on a few projects.
I've got a compiler that is almost ready to demo. I'm also building
screen-printing equipment right now.
I'm going to need to take some new pictures and spend a minute updating things... Besides my little refridgerator, I have been doing work with my new PIC programmer. Right now I've got an LCD hooked up. It's rather neat. In other news, I started reading Sluggy Freelance (and thus flushed three days). It's now been added to my list of comics. I think Riff is hot ;)
| I must be mad... | March 16, 2002 |
|
I can't wait till I get a minute to actually do a major update to my page,
so much has changed in the past few months. Yesterday I finally got some time
to myself, so I went on a mighty hacking binge.
It all started when I found a surplus peltier module in a bunch of old parts. After doing quick measurements, I ascertained that it's probably a 12V 30W peltier (it has a resistance just over 5 Ohms). Now, most people, upon finding themselves the proud owner of a 30W peltier, would quickly use it to cool their overclocked dual Celeron. But not me. Instead, I got out some sheet-metal shears, some sheet aluminum, some mat-board, a bunch of foam, and a handful of components. I quickly whipped up a little adjustable temperature regulator circuit on a breadboard, dug out an adapter that could push the peltier at about 15W or so, and started hacking. In the end I was left with a little refridgerator, just big enough for one can of pop. I'll actually set up a page about it (including pictures) when I actually get it working (there was a failed solder joint on the peltier, and I was out of thermal compound. That, and I haven't made up a proper clip to hold the old Pentium heatsink on the back yet).
| Much neatness | March 5, 2002 |
|
I've been toying around with my kernel, and trying out some new things.
Since Aurora is somewhat unstable, I've been looking forward to ext3 for a
long time. Since I've had a few crashes now, I'm glad I did. Especially
since a new addition seems to further destabilize things.
That addition just happens to be MOSIX, which is some really neat clustering software. Currently I use it to connect my laptop, which is only a P90, to my main machine. The difference is certainly non-trivial, although 10BaseT is a little limited for the purpose. Just the same, the difference between the two machines certainly adds a lot of power to the laptop. Personally, I'm thinking of adding a few of the other decent machines in this room to this cluster. Clustering rocks.
| Busy, busy, always busy... | March 4, 2002 |
|
Now things recently are just going insane... I'm now starting a business
printing circuit boards, and I've just been working myself silly. I never
thought that PC-boards could be so messy, smelly, unpleasant, but somehow fun.
If anybody out there needs some custom PC-board work, just write me. I'd gladly pick up a couple custom jobs on the side.
| I hate netscape... | February 5, 2002 |
|
OK, it's now official. I hate Netscape 4.
There was a time when NN4 was my primary browser. In fact, if you look closely, you can even see some tags left-over from when I originally made this page with Composer (it's now an all-Vim show). There was a time, way back in history when this page didn't even display properly in Konqueror. Times change. I've been designing a new page for a new online robotics store, and, for the life of me, I can't make it work in Netscape. Unlike this page, which is all relative tables and no graphics other than the one above, the counter, and the Vim banner, the new robotics page uses ROUNDED tables (ooh, aah ;). Netscape really doesn't appreciate having fixed and relative tables mixed together. I wasn't aware of the problem, since it worked fine in Konqueror, and IE doesn't really seem to mind it either. Anyway, I got sick of web-design, so I came here to post this rant.
| Big stuff coming... | February 1, 2002 |
| I've been doing a lot of stuff here, so I have been quite short on time. I'm mostly through setting up a PC-board lab now. I'll have to put up pictures of everything that's not a trade secret sooner or later. I've got a LOT of new equipment, but I will not get much of a chance to put up pictures for a while. | |
| New updates. | January 13, 2002 |
|
I just got a new camera (some sort of Logitech Quickcam, a "Pro 3000" or
somesuch). I got it used for like $20, so even though it's Windows-only, it
was worth every penny. I took some new pictures and put them up on the page.
There is now a picture of my new PIC programmer board (prototype/demo model) under the 16F84 page. I have a few of these for sale, they are fully in-circuit functional and should work with the 16C84 as well. I haven't figured out the price yet, but I'll list them on eBay soon (as soon as they're finished building).
| After the flood. | January 1, 2002 |
|
Well Happy New Year to all! *giggle*
I just got a minor attack of Slashdot, receiving 3000 hits in two days (I feel popular all of a sudden). I have at least looked in all the boxes I got yesterday now (two major electronics deliveries in one day), although I have a lot of work left to do. Finally, I've spent my morning hacking away on a homegrown charge-pumped RS232C interface to my PIC microcontroller. I'll try to put up an entry on my PIC page about it later, when I can coax my camera to work again. Yes, I really *DO* spend all my holidays hacking.
| Oh, my head. | December 31, 2001 |
|
For those of you coming off Slashdot for my Quake2 on AA, you can find it
here, or you can follow the link to aalib2 on the
left.
It looks like I've been Slashdotted, at least somewhat. My hit counter was more like 750 before this night started, although my server seems to be standing up to the onslaught. But that's not all! This morning, I get, not one, but TWO major shipments of electronics. One of them was 150lbs of random stuff! There were packing peanuts everywhere! I've never seen a 0.45F capacitor before now... Gah! Now to try to SORT 15lbs of capacitors... (10lbs of resistors, etc.)
| Waiting for the axe to strike.. | December 31, 2001 |
|
Looks like I beat somebody to the punch on slashdot. The story on aaquake2
is predated by these photos of Quake2 on AA back on May 3, 1999 (according to
my filestamps). I'll try to dig up more info on how I did it, since it was
quite some time ago.
Find the information at this page or follow the link to aalib2 on the left.
| More PIC stuff. | December 21, 2001 |
| Spending my Yule doing weird things with my PIC evaluation board. Check it out over in the PIC16F84 section, I got a stepper running. | |
| Belated update. | December 16, 2001 |
| Just finished *MOST* of my exams, so I have a chance to update the page. I took a mess of pictures for the "Test Equipment" section, and I added a page about my fun with the 16F84. I also added an online manual for the Eico 377, under the picture of my 377 in the "Test Equipment" page. | |
| Busy, busy, always busy... | October 9, 2001 |
|
Whoa, I don't think I've ever gone that long between updates. I'm not
dead, but in the third year of an engineering program I might as well be.
I'm also working on a bunch of major projects of my own, and SOMEBODY (you
know who you are) went and got me addicted to multiplayer Diablo II... So
overall, I'm out of time for anything.
Oh well, I got myself into this mess. I'll survive. And I'll try to update more often.
| DNS Problems (sorry) | August 30, 2001 |
|
No wonder nobody is visiting, my DNS has been down for some time. The place
I use to dig up my IP address (to compare to my DNS entry and update it)
decided that one reload per hour seems to be an aweful lot. Anyway, I changed
it again, and maybe this time it will hold a little better.
Obviously this solution is not acceptable for mission-critical applications, I may revamp the updater so that it uses several different IP address sources. Anyway, I should be back up soon now.
| Code Red Attacks. | August 13, 2001 |
|
Just reading through my weblogs, and it appears that my (Apache-based)
web-server has been attacked by several variants of the "Code Red" worm.
Of course, my webserver being Apache-based, I just have a whole
long list of 404 errors in my weblog. I've been hit over 400 times by
this thing, so if I was using IIS, I'd probably be pretty messed up
(but that's kind-of implied, isn't it?).
Page updates are slow, I just had exams, and now I've got to finish paperwork for next term. I've got a new algorithm to put up, a B-tree version of the fast-array, which achieves similar performance without the high memory overheads. I've also got a few other things to put up, but it'll take some time.
| Minor updates. | August 3, 2001 |
| Just a few new things, I added some more new information regarding the name of this page to the "About this page" page. I also added a link to Digitally Imported Radio, over there at the side. I constantly listen to their Eurodance stream, and they play a lot of my favorite artists (I'm a big rave fan). | |
| Another new page. | August 2, 2001 |
| I just added a page on my test equipment, although it's a little dry since it lacks pictures temporarily. Oh well, it'll be fixed sooner or later. I'm not 100% on why I'm putting this up, but I suppose it might be useful if you're just getting started. I should put up a page on EDA's, as soon as I find one or two that are actually usable. And something about my electronics projects should go up soon too. | |
| I'm not dead. | August 1, 2001 |
|
I'm just posting this update to let everybody know that I'm not, in fact,
dead. I know it's been a week since I last wrote something here, it's been
hectic. On the one hand my assignments are all due right now, and I have
exams next week. On the other, I'm learning a new programming language
(Mercury, it's a cool language) and such things.
Just reading my guestbook, and I think I'm coming off a little too strong. Sorry people, I don't try to be indimidating... So don't be intimidated, or else ;)
| Fixing up for other browsers. | July 24, 2001 |
| I'm sort of half-way through fixing up my page for non-Netscape browsers. Turns out that I did something really nasty that made it not work in Konqueror (which is a really nice browser). Now I just need to fix that top image's alignment. | |
| On life, the universe, and waveforms. | July 19, 2001 |
|
Well, I suppose UPS was only two days late with my oscilloscope, but I did
finally receive it. It's an HP1740A, it was made in the late 1970's, and it
seems to work (I just turned it on so far, and sure enough, two green lines).
I've got to learn how to use it now (I can use a scope, but this one's a
little bit fancier than I'm used to). Then I'll probably test hooking
it to my signal generator.
I'll try to start posting pictures of my equipment, but I (rather foolishly) bought a Creative Labs Webcam Go a while back, and that's all I've got around here. It's an OK camera, but Windows only, meaning that my Linux system has some trouble with it, to say the least. Oh well, theres a Windows system around here somewhere, I think (digs through the stacks of old machines).
| Added the Fast Array | July 18, 2001 |
|
Well, I seem to have come up with a new data-structure for dense arrays.
I'm not 100% sure that it has never been done before, but it's not well
documented if it has been. Anyway, it's over under the "My Software" column,
if you want to give it a read, go right ahead. If you've heard of this
before, please send me some references to where I can find out about it!
In other news, I recently picked up a signal generator to complement my oscilloscope. My scope is STILL not in, but it may arrive tomorrow. Anyway, the signal generator is an EICO 377, I'm not 100% sure of the manufacture date, but it was some time in the 1950's or so. It is 100% tubes, even using a tube rectifier. Wow, the thing still works (well, as well as my multimeter can detect anyway, I'll test it more thoroughly with my oscilloscope soon).
| Small update | July 12, 2001 |
|
Added a new page about the page itself. It's over there in the (now renamed)
"About" category.
Well, it appears I'm starting to get traffic, mostly from Slashdot, of all things. Luckily I'm not the brunt of the Slashdot effect yet, I'm not sure my poor little server could handle it. Well, it seems that UPS shipped my oscilloscope to Minneapolis by accident, so it might still be a while. Annoying, but at least it's not lost.
| Made site look better | July 5, 2001 |
|
Did some tidying up of the site, fixed some problems with the table-rendering
in a few pages. Finally getting the hang of this whole web-design thing ;)
I'm in the process of digging up some EDA's that (I hope) should be useful enough to use. I should soon start putting electronics pages up, probably starting with a list of tools that I use (both hardware and software). Hopefully I'll be able to start adding electronics projects here too, once I'm set up for it.
| Added Guestbook. | July 3, 2001 |
|
This time I really should probably be doing something more useful with my
time... Anyway I added a new guestbook, it is available now. The link is
on the left. Sadly, I actually wrote the thing this time. I was too lazy to
scour the net for one, since my last (rather nasty) experience in setting up
the page-counter. Yet again, the silly thing is written in Python, my
language of choice for scripts just slightly larger than a shell-script.
Anyway, sign away, but keep in mind that I do retain the right to yank anything offensive. If you see anything offensive on the guestbook which you would like to see removed (and I didn't notice), then just write me a mail (the link is also on the left).
| Added Google. | July 1, 2001 |
|
Sitting here, just after midnight, Canada Day morning (yes I'm Canadian)...
Adding a Google search to my webpage. This actually took a little longer than
expected, I ended up putting it in a handy box on the side instead of the
(incredibly inconvenient) original location of at the dead end of the page.
Do I have anything better to do? Not really, just this and wait for my new Oscilloscope to come in. I should be putting up an electronics page soon when I get my new lab area set up again.
| Added nTec Build System | June 29, 2001 |
|
I just added some software to the page, finally. This is the build system
that we use where I work, with the exception of one utility I had to rewrite
from scratch. Just click the link on the left there, the one that says
"nTec build system" to get it all.
This should work with both C and C++ at the moment, although it should really also work with any language that gcc supports on your system.
| DNS Configuration Screw-up | June 28, 2001 |
| Well, don't I feel stupid! Like I said, this is hosted on my machine, so I use a Dynamic DNS, right? Well, I wrote my own program to do the updates. And it updated the first address properly, but not the second. Guess who mixed up os.system and os.execv? (it's a Python script). That's right! The first address was being updated, but the script vanished from memory because of the os.execv, so when my IP was changed, this page went down. Lovely, isn't it? Oh well, it's back up now. | |
| Fixing dead links... | June 21, 2001 |
| Just letting people know that I have added the "Me" page finally. As if you're interested in my little life. I also added a section about my computer, which somebody might find interesting. I added a new comic to my bookmarks as well. | |
| Connection problems... | June 11, 2001 |
|
My ISP swears that not letting me connect to my own machine is some sort of
"security feature". Bah, whatever. I hacked up a DNS redirection on my LAN
to just send all the requests for this page directly to my internal IP.
Oh, I also added my IRC software (so far, just a little Python bot) to my page. You can get it by clicking the "IRC software" button. Enjoy!
| Connection problems... | June 11, 2001 |
| This machine, if you haven't guessed, is hosted on one of my computers. The problem is, my ISP has some weird bug whereby I cannot connect to my own computer. I hope I get this resolved soon, so updates can come more frequently. | |
| First update, page started | June 11, 2001 |
| First version of my new page. This is actually a pretty big step, this means I can start posting news and stuff to my page now. Hopefully I'll put some actual free stuff up later. | |
